Hangar Inspections - 2021

It’s that time of year again for Airport building inspections. Consistent with previous years, Airport staff will be accompanied by Denton Fire Department as we conduct mandatory annual fire inspections and airport compliance checks. In addition to the routine inspections, Development Services has also asked to be involved. They will be checking that all tenants are operating in compliance with their Certificate of Occupancy, as well as being compliant with all other building codes for the City of Denton.

All hangar inspections will be conducted November 8th- 12th and November 15th-19th, 2021, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Please Airport Operations at (940) 349-7722 or email Daniel.warschun@cityofdenton.com by Friday November 6th, 2021 to request a preferred time during one of the available inspection dates. If you are unable to be present, you will need to have someone else onsite to provide access and sign any necessary paperwork on your behalf.

As a reminder, according to TxDOT Aviation guidelines and FAA Grant Assurances, it is prohibited to use storage hangars for any other purpose than aeronautical activity and storing non-aeronautical items in hangars on Airport property does not constitute an aeronautical use. Also, privately built and privately-owned hangars are not exempt from the guidelines or standard airport sponsor assurances.

In preparation for the inspection, please make certain that your hangar meets the following standards:

  • All hangars must have current (tagged and inspected) fire extinguisher(s)

  • Extension cords cannot be plugged into an outlet (unless for approved aircraft trickle chargers)

  • No propane heaters of any kind

  • No flammable liquids or materials – unless you have a permit or a Certificate of Occupancy that allows for these materials and all materials must have a current SDS (Safety Data Sheet) on hand and meet the storage requirements for the material and quantity stored

  • The hangar address must be clearly marked and visible from the roadside

All on-airport hangars must only be used to store aircraft, items which are used on or for aircraft, or items for personal convenience while using the hangar. Examples of permitted items in aircraft storage hangars include but are not limited to:

  • Aircraft tow bar or similar aircraft towing equipment for the storage and/or removal of the aircraft in the hangar

  • Aircraft flight and maintenance logs, to include filing cabinets as needed for orderly storage of these logs

  • A desk for the purposes of conducting flight planning or other directly aeronautical purposes

  • A small refrigerator or appliances used for personal convenience while using the hangar

  • Trickle battery chargers maybe be connected to the aircraft battery

* All stored items must be permitted by fire codes and City Ordinances.

Temporarily parking an automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, or other reasonable transportation used by the aircraft owner/user in the hangar is permitted while the aircraft is being used. Under no circumstances may a hangar located on airport property be used for the storage of any vehicles or other non-aeronautical items. Items commonly found that are non-aeronautical and should not be stored in hangars include, but are not limited to:

  • Boats, motorcycles, ATVs, automobiles, recreational vehicles, campers, trailers, etc.

  • Household items that do not have aeronautical purposes

  • General storage of non-aviation related items

If during the inspection any fire code violations are identified, the tenants will be given an opportunity to correct the problem(s) in a timely manner. Failure to correct the identified problem may result in a citation being issued by the Fire Department. In addition, Airport staff will also be onsite to ensure compliance with your lease agreement and identify your based aircraft as required by the FAA. Any tenants who are not in compliance with lease provisions will have the opportunity to work with Airport Staff to correct those issues as needed. Please email a copy of your based aircraft along with their corresponding hangar location to Daniel.Warschun@cityofdenton.com by Friday, October 18th to ensure compliance with your lease agreement.

We appreciate your efforts and cooperation in ensure your hangar is compliance with these regulations.

Thank you,

Airport Staff
